Background of the Study
The rise of social media influencers has transformed the landscape of digital discourse in Nigeria. In recent years, influencers on platforms such as Instagram have become pivotal in shaping public opinion, cultural norms, and consumer behavior (Chukwu, 2023). This study examines how influencers mediate digital conversations and contribute to sociopolitical narratives in Nigeria. The dynamic nature of digital communication enables influencers to rapidly disseminate information, thereby bridging the gap between traditional media and the digital audience (Okafor, 2024). Their curated content, which often blends personal branding with social commentary, is central to discussions on identity, modernity, and consumerism. Influencers have been seen as agents of change who both reflect and shape societal values, especially in a nation characterized by diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The interaction between influencer-generated content and audience engagement plays a critical role in the evolution of digital discourse, influencing everything from fashion trends to political activism. Despite the growing interest in social media studies, there remains a paucity of empirical research on the specific role of Instagram influencers in Nigeria’s online debate and community-building efforts. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating how these digital figures affect discourse, spark conversations, and influence perceptions among Nigerian youths (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although social media influencers have gained prominence, there is limited scholarly attention to their specific impact on Nigerian digital discourse, particularly on Instagram. The rapid evolution of digital platforms has outpaced academic research, leaving a critical gap in understanding how influencer content shapes public narratives and consumer behavior (Balogun, 2024). Moreover, the interplay between cultural identity and influencer communication remains underexplored. This study addresses these issues by examining how influencers contribute to the formation of public opinion and engage audiences in meaningful digital conversations. The lack of empirical evidence creates challenges for policymakers and media practitioners aiming to harness digital platforms for social change, while also raising questions about the authenticity and accountability of online personas (Eze, 2023).
